Every year, your water utility publishes a water quality report, often called a Consumer Confidence Report. You can find it on the utility’s website or ask for a copy.
What to look for
Start with the source of your water and the disinfectant used. Then look at the table of detected substances. Each line shows the level found and the legal limit. Staying under the limit means the utility meets the standard.
What it doesn’t tell you
The report describes water as it leaves the plant. It can’t tell you about your home’s pipes, your water heater or how hard the water is at your tap. Hardness is also often reported as a range for the whole system.
The next step
A test at your own tap fills in the rest. We measure hardness, chlorine and chloramine, total dissolved solids and pH during the free in-home test, and we explain each result.
