Reverse osmosis, softener or whole-home filter?

Buyer’s guide · 4 min read

Water softener

Removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, for every tap in the house. It stops spotting, protects your water heater and fixtures, and helps soap lather. It does not remove chloramine or most contaminants, and it adds a small amount of sodium.

Whole-home carbon filter

Catalytic carbon reduces chlorine and chloramine taste and odor at every tap, shower and washing machine. Standard carbon is much less effective on chloramine, so the type of carbon matters.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

A membrane at one kitchen tap that reduces dissolved solids and many contaminants for drinking and cooking. It needs a drain connection and sends a small amount of water to the drain. Look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification.

How to choose

Spots and crust: a softener. Smell or taste everywhere: carbon. The best-tasting drinking water: RO. Many Miami homes use more than one. Your test results decide, and if one is enough, that’s all we’ll recommend.
