What’s in Miami tap water?

Water quality · 4 min read

Most Miami-Dade tap water starts in the Biscayne Aquifer, a shallow limestone formation. As groundwater moves through limestone it picks up calcium and magnesium. Those minerals are what make water hard, and how hard it is varies by neighborhood.

Utilities also add a disinfectant so water stays safe on the way to your home. Many South Florida systems use chloramine, a mix of chlorine and ammonia, instead of plain chlorine. Some people notice a faint pool or medicinal smell. Your utility’s annual water quality report says what it uses and what it measures at the plant.

Is it safe?

Utilities must meet federal drinking water standards, so treating water at home is often about taste, scale and preference rather than a sign that your water is unsafe. What the report can’t show is what happens between the plant and your tap, because pipes, water heaters and fixtures all change water.

What a test at your tap can tell you

That’s why we test at your tap. Our on-site test covers hardness, chlorine and chloramine, total dissolved solids and pH. Lead, PFAS and other trace contaminants need a certified lab test, and we’ll point you to one if you want it.
